Geology of the Midcoast Area

Calendar Mar 12, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Explore the geology of our immediate area through classroom work and field trips. From glacial sculpting and erratics to the primordial origins of the rock units, Mid-Coast Maine tells many geological stories. This course includes an introduction to rock and mineral identification, plate tectonics, bedrock geology and glacial geology all in local context. Maps, written text and on-line sources will be used. The weekly class schedule and several short field trip dates will be firmed up at the first class. Student interests will guide the course.

David Pope grew up rockhounding in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. He holds both an undergraduate and graduate degree in geology. He recently authored “Geology of the Pemaquid Region, Mid-Coast Maine”.

Getting Paid to Talk - Intro to Voice Acting

This exciting class will explore numerous aspects of voice-over work for television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the Internet in your area. We will cover all the basics, including how to prepare the all-important demo, and how to be successful and earn great income in this exciting field. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and to hear examples of demos recorded by professional voice actors.

Class participants will even have a chance to record a commercial script under the direction of a real producer! This class is informative, lots of fun, and a great first step for anyone interested in voice acting professionally.

 

Gluten-Free Cooking

Gluten free living can be a challenge. But with a little guidance, the gluten free world can be easy to negotiate. Together we will prepare and share a delicious 4-course gluten free meal. We will discuss everyday items that contain gluten and ingredients that can be substituted for gluten.

Chef Mikael Andersson grew up in Sweden. After culinary school, he was a private chef to several ambassadors in Europe and South America. He worked in some of the best restaurants in New York City as a pastry chef. He was Executive Chef at Colby College. Currently, he lives in Wiscasset with his family and is Executive Chef at Lincoln Academy.

 

Grow Your Own Organic Garden

Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner?

Join us for an evening-long workshop on how to grow your own garden organically. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science and how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the fundamentals of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures to manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and cultural methods for dealing with pests.

The instructor will be an experienced farmer or gardener from your region. We will even send you home with free seeds! All are welcome, from first-timers to experienced gardeners who want to experiment with new techniques.

Handsaw Sharpening

This class will teach students how to hand-sharpen handsaws both rip cut and crosscut. Students will learn nomenclature of saws, the types of handsaws that exist and what to look for when deciding to purchase either a new or vintage saw.

There is a $36 materials fee payable to the instructor. This will provide the student with their own tools needed for sharpening any saw, their own practice saw plate to work on in class and take home, plus a set of plans for building a saw sharpening clamp. Students may also bring in their own saws. Class size is limited.

Note: This class will not cover sharpening of the larger crosscut saws used in cutting timber.

Niles Krech owns Kennebec Saws and has hand sharpened hundreds of saws.

Healthy Lifestyle

This is a 6 week program for group Health Coaching. The first class we will review your personal health history privately. This will give the instructor a better understanding of your personal health goals and needs. Each week we will create a meal and discuss food related topics in order to help you make the best decisions when preparing food on your own at home. We will work together in interactive groups. We will cook four out of the six classes. Meals we will prepare include, Black Bean Enchilada Casserole and Chicken Veggie Casserole, along with other meals.

Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED

Early registration is encouraged – class size limited! Each year an estimated 166,000 lives are claimed by sudden cardiac arrest. That’s about 455 people each day. Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival. Almost 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by a family member.

This course will cover basic adult, child and infant CPR skills as well AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) training for the lay person and non-healthcare worker who needs CPR certification. It includes American Heart Association CPR certification. Learn CPR today – the life you save could be that of your own loved one!

Sally Larson is a Clinical Educator at Lincoln Healthcare and has been an RN for 39 years. Sally trained in England and has been practicing in the USA since 1980. She is an instructor in ACLS, PALS, and BLS.

Chris will show you how easy it is to use a handpowered pasta maker to create fettuccine and spaghetti.Then enjoy your pasta with some delicious, simple-to-make sauces. If you have a dusty one sitting at home, feel free to bring it to class!

Chris Toy is a Stonewall Kitchen Cooking Instructor with alifelong interest in cooking with an Asian-Downeast fusion flavor.
