RSU #40 Adult Education

Beginner Bookbinding

with Joelle Webber

$65

Learn the art of book binding with three projects that build basic skills and creative experience. Paste papering is a lot like adult finger painting, and uses different types of pigments and mark making tools to create all the decorative papers needed for the other five binding classes (including the next intermediate session). At the end of the first class, we will go over what tools should be collected for the rest of the classes. Pocket books employ the tools you collected and your paste papers, making two artist books that begin with the same pocket text blocks, but have different covers, which change the final structures. Besides generally getting to know our book binding tools, these pocket books will allow plenty of time to decorate with cutouts, colored pencils and paper collage. With Pamphlet books, learn to sew three books with the pamphlet stitch. The first book will have the basic stitching pattern and paper cover. The second will explore a more complex style of cover. For the third book, we will try a different stitching pattern. If we still have time, we can add decorative stitching and collage to our book covers. $10 material fee included in the cost of the course. Tools and supplies list discussed at the first class.
